What Is Botox® for Bruxism?

Botox® is a purified protein used to relax muscles. Used precisely and judiciously by an expert dermatologist, it works on the contracted muscles in your head and neck, and releases the built-up pressure.

As a result, you’ll notice much less jaw clenching and teeth grinding throughout the day, along with decreased symptoms and even reduced stress.

How Botox® for Bruxism Works

Botox® treatments for bruxism are often recommended by dentists as a preventative option.

The treatment itself consists of tiny injections with a fine needle into the masseter — a large muscle that moves the jaw. No anaesthetic is required, and most patients report minimal discomfort. Relief can begin within days, and improvement is generally seen within two weeks. To maintain results, treatments should be repeated at regular intervals.

Note that Botox® treatments for bruxism or TMJ are not covered by OHIP, but may be partially or fully covered by your private insurance.
