What Is Botox® for Chronic Migraine?
As a purified protein used to relax muscles, Botox® has been shown to significantly improve the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic migraine headaches. Botox treatment for migraines is approved by the FDA and Health Canada to prevent chronic migraines in adults who experience severe headaches 15 or more days a month.
If you suffer from chronic migraine headaches, Botox® can be an effective preventative treatment option. However it requires treatment by a highly qualified professional. Dr. Muhn and Dr. Rosen are certified experts in the use of Botox®. Both physicians administer and oversee our expertly trained injectors for the administration of specialized treatments, such as Botox® for chronic migraine.
How Botox® for Chronic Migraine Works
For chronic migraines, Botox® is administered through a series of tiny injections with a fine needle into the specific head and neck muscles thought to contribute to headache symptoms.
You don’t need anaesthetic for Botox® treatments as there’s very little discomfort. Relief can begin within days and full improvement is generally seen within two weeks. Treatments must be repeated at regular three-month intervals to maintain results.
Botox® treatments for chronic migraine require a referral from your family doctor or neurologist and are not covered by OHIP. However, private insurance may cover all or a portion of the treatment.
